What would Gordon Gekko do? I’ve often asked myself that exact question during these tough economic times and now it turns out, we are about to find out because Michael Douglas and Oliver Stone have signed on for the ‘Wall Street’ sequel from 20th Century Fox.
Talk about 80’s excess! Last week I reported that Bret Easton Ellis had finished the follow up to “Less Than Zero” and hopes to unite the original cast for the movie version. Now comes word that Michael Douglas is reprising his role as the ruthless Gordon Gekko, for another dose of Wall Street’s financial mayhem with a sequel to the 1987 hit, Wall Street.” Director Oliver Stone has also signed on hoping to work his magic again with the yet to be titled sequel.
According to Variety, ”Transformers” star Shia LaBeouf is currently in negotiations with Douglas for a part in the film. The sequel storyline will focus on a young Wall Street trader (previously Charlie Sheen’s ‘Bud Fox”) and the current economic recession will inspire a large part of the story. “We need to keep the storyline under wraps, but it’s literally ripped from today’s headlines,” said a spokesman for movie studio 20th Century Fox.
In the original film, Gordon Gekko was a symbol of 80’s excess and greed during the financial boom on Wall Street. Douglas won an Oscar for his performance as Gekko, whose declaration that “lunch is for wimps” became a catchphrase. We last saw Gekko facing prison for insider trading, but the sequel finds him back in business more than two decades later. Douglas, 64, described the returning character as “a great, old-fashioned villain” and added “I don’t think he’s much different. He’s just had more time to think about what to do.”
The timing of this sequel couldn’t be more perfect considering our current economic climate. Whether Gordon Gekko goes down in financial ruin saves the world, this will be one sequel I will not miss.
Charlie Sheen, who played a stockbroker in the first film, will not return. Wall Street 2 will go into production this summer and is scheduled for release in 2010. New York, London and Dubai will feature as locations.
