PageSix is reporting that Frank McCourt is headed back to the Emerald Isle. The author of “Angela’s Ashes” and “Teacher Man” made one final request before he died on Sunday: “Scatter my ashes on the Shannon.” That’s a reference to the windy river flowing through his hometown of Limerick.
Meanwhile, Smith magazine founder Larry Smith will publish McCourt posthumously. Smith told Page Six he’d been trying for months to get in touch with McCourt to ask him to contribute to “It All Changed in an Instant: More Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous & Obscure.” “A few months ago I woke up to find an e-mail from him,” said Smith. It read, “Larry: Here is my half dozen — ‘Miserable childhood leads to royalties.’ ” Smith recalls, “I was elated. Then I realized: it’s only five words!” So, McCourt added “The” to the start of his sentence.
