Shoe Legend MANOLO BLAHNIK gave Vogue UK a sneak peek at his spring/summer 2010 collection and he revealed some very interesting thoughts on celebrities, low heels, Hollywood glamour and Marc Jacobs.
“I hate celebrities,” he revealed to VOGUE.COM. “All those pointless girls – I won’t name names, but you know who I mean. They are ‘famous’. Ridiculous. I like women with style: actresses like Uma Thurman, icons like Audrey Hepburn. I like women with style to wear my shoes.”
Stylish women have embraced Manolo Blahniks classic style mixed with equally fabulous footwear. For his spring / summer 2010 collection, Blahnik is offering up a variety of shoes with flats, heels and oxfords perfected with his signature delicate exuberance. “There are a few classic shapes that I always rework and revisit every season; the pieces my customer always wants to wear. They are inspired by actresses and movie stars. Old Hollywood glamour.”
“I’m obsessed with old movies, actresses like Sophia Loren and María Félix. This style is a key silhouette for the season. It’s made in Italian linen. The fabric took a long time to get right, actually.”

“Everyone is saying that there is a trend for lower heels this season, but I have been doing kitten heels forever; it’s nothing new. I love flats though – I absolutely love them. I always do some in my collection but this season, more than ever. On this one the tongue is removable.”
ON TIMELESS STYLE: “I like things that are timeless. I love when you see someone who has had the same pair of shoes mended again and again, for years. I love things that are made to last and I admire women who have style. As far as the changing fashions, I just love shoes; I don’t give a damn about trends!”

ON WOMEN IN FLAT SHOES: “I think women in flat shoes look beautiful – but – it is more difficult to look graceful. When women wear flat shoes they often walk: stomp, stomp, stomp –like a man. It is more of a challenge to be feminine in flats. You look at Audrey Hepburn or Brigitte Bardot when they wore flats – they were beautiful; like a little reindeer – but it is not like that for everyone.”
ON BEING THE FIRST MAN ON THE COVER OF VOGUE: “We had such a great time; me, [David] Bailey, Grace Coddington, Anjelica Huston – we went on holiday for three weeks…I don’t remember where now…and shot the whole spread. It was fabulous. I had never taken my clothes off in a picture before but Bailey said: ‘Do it, it’s fine,’ so we did. I have great memories of that shoot.”
ON GALLIANO VS MCQUEEN: “I love both their stuff. They both put on a real show and people say ‘It’s too much, it’s unwearable.’ But if you strip back all the make-up and the wigs it’s just really beautiful pieces. Every single piece is wearable – that’s why women love them. McQueen is more influenced by the street though, whilst Galliano is more intellectual – he’s all in his head.”

ON THIS SEASON’S CLOG TREND: “When I design, personally I like delicate shoes, but I actually like this season’s clogs; I love flats – and I like the peasant look. We have actually ordered two styles of clogs to be made this season for Manolo Blahnik.”
ON MARC JACOBS: “I love Marc Jacobs. I love what he’s doing at his own label and at Louis Vuitton. The flat shoes at LV were fun; very witty. He – and others like him; McQueen and Galliano – they used to be the children but now they are the old boys. Which makes me an older boy.”
