HAPPY HOUR: ‘Balloon Boy’ Parents Behind Bars

November 12th, 2009 · No Comments

Remember the ‘Heene Hoax’ that took place in Colorado, about a month ago? Well Falcon’s parents have turned themselves in.

For those who don’t recall this headline topping scandal, it occurred this October. It was reported that Six-year-old Falcon Heene was inside a silver helium balloon, created by his parents, which floated 40 miles away from his Fort Collins, Co. home.

Falcon was found unharmed far away from the balloon, in their attic. Later it was discovered that his parents staged the scam in an attempt to pitch a reality show.

He and his two older brothers will not face charges due to their young age. On the other hand, the parent’s, Richard and Mayumi, lawyer, David Lane stated they have reached a settlement with Larimer Country, Colo. Authorities.

Richard will plead guilty to a felony charge of attempting to influence a public servant facing up to 90 days in jail if the court agrees. While Mayumi is facing 60 days in jail pleading guilty to misdemeanor charge of making a false report to authorities.

Because Mayumi is a Japanese citizen, she would have to face deportation if she admitted to a felony and her husband would “fall on his sword” to avoid this says their lawyer, hence the lesser charge.

In addition, Mr. Lane states, “It is supremely ironic that law enforcement has expressed such grave concern over the welfare of the children . . . But it was ultimately the threat of taking the children’s mother from the family and deporting her to Japan which fueled this deal.”

Recent confirmations revealed by ETonline reveals, Richard now faces two to six years in jail and a $200,000 to $500,000 fine. Mayumi faces six month in jail and a $50 to $250 fine.
