Kristen Stewart gets edgy in two Sundance premieres, and rocks onstage with Joan Jett
“The Runaways” made its Sundance Film Festival debut on Sunday, January 24th at the Eccles Center Theatre in Park City, Utah to rave reviews.
Hitting the red carpet were the stars of the movie, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, along with their Rock-n-Roll counterparts, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie.
And while most Hollywood starlets spend hours prepping for a movie premiere with designer clothes as well as hair and makeup teams, Kristen Stewart took inspiration from rocker Joan Jett and hit “The Runaways” premiere in less formal, grunge attire: a gray tee-shirt, black hooded sweatshirt, black skinny jeans and Adidas sneakers. Stewart has also maintained the dark and edgy locks she sported while filming, which required her to wear a long wig when shooting “Twilight: Eclipse” over the summer.
Meanwhile, co-star Dakota Fanning opted for a chic (and grown-up look) wearing a alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet Brisa Cascade Front Blazer, which she paired with rocker chic gloves and an all black ensemble.
“The Runaways,” which opens March 19, is a biographical film based on the 1970s all-girl rock band which was formed by Joan Jett, portrayed by Stewart. Fellow “Twilight: New Moon” actress Dakota Fanning, 15, stars alongside her as Cherie Currie, Joan’s friend, co-founder of the group and the lead singer.
The film is partially based on Currie’s 1989 autobiography Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story, which the group’s rise to fame and her battle and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
The night before the premiere, Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning joined Joan Jett and Cherie Currie on stage during a performance by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
In town lending her support to “The Runaways,” the singer took the stage in a rock worthy outfit consisting of a one-piece sequined leotard and sneakers.
After thanking the film’s director, Floria Sigismondi, Jett also gave a shout out to Kristen and Dakota, who were in the crowd at the gig at the Salt Lake City nightclub Harry O’s, and welcomed them on stage so she could thank them in from of the audience.
Stewart, in ripped jeans and a dark hoodie, and Fanning, in sleek dark outfit and heels, waved and smiled as the crowd broke into thunderous applause, but quickly retreated backstage where they finished watching Jett’s incredible show out of the spotlight.
In addition to wowing critics with her performance in “The Runaways,” Kristen Stewart is also at Sundance to promote R-rated indie flick “Welcome to the Rileys.”
Stewart, who plays a young prostitute alongside The Sopranos star James Gandolfini, bares all in the flick (including wearing red tape x’s as pasties) to play a pot-smoking trash-talking 16-year-old stripper working seedy clubs in New Orleans. “My character really became a part of me. I haven’t felt so personally involved in something [before],” Stewart told MTV of Mallory, her character in “Rileys.”
