NY FASHION WEEK: Models Pause for Alexander McQueen at Haiti Fashion for Relief (NAOMI CAMPBELL, AGYNESS DEYN, HELENA CHRISTENSEN)

February 17th, 2010 · No Comments

There was a somber moment of remembrance during Friday night’s Fashion for Relief show as supermodel Naomi Campbell dedicated the finale of her charity show to her friend Alexander McQueen, who died the day before.

After her last trip down the runway in a thigh-high, shimmering, multi-colored graphic print dress by Alexander McQueen, supermodel Naomi Campbell was joined b y seven other models on the runway including Helena Christensen, Karen Elson, and Angela Lindvall – all clad in McQueen creations – in a moving tribute set to Patti Smith’s “Because the Nightthat capped the show.

Daphne Guinness, a McQueen devotee, took to the stage in a sparkly bodysuit from his spring/summer 2010 collection. According to WWD, the gorgeous group was overcome with emotion like many in the audience were following the announcement of the now legendary designer’s death the day before.

“I’m not ready to talk about that yet,” Campbell sighed from backstage. Her friend Fergie added: “I know you’re missing your friend. He was a genius, and he will be missed.”

Though the show ended on a somber note, the rest was fun and flirty as more than 50 looks came down the runway, many of them in bold pops of color with sky-high hemlines and dangerously high heels to match.

Kelly Osbourne, Estelle, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, Donna Karan, Diane Von Furstenberg, Margherita Missoni, Georgina Chapman, and Alan Cumming all sashayed in a stunning array of attire donated by various designers.

A surprise model turned out to be Chris Brown, who provoked a mixed response from the audience which cheered then went silent for a few moments.

“I look forward to visiting Haiti to witness how the funds we raise are helping make a difference,” Campbell wrote in a column for the Huffington Post. “Mothers and their children are Haiti’s future; we must not let them down.”

Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, hosted the event, and told guests, “Thank you, by being here you’ve made a difference.” Though Fergie initially said she wouldn’t walk in the show, she put on a smile and walked the length of the runway in a floor-length black chiffon evening gown.

Model Agyness Deyn, a pro on the runway, had a catwalk malfunction when she took not one but two tumbles on the runway.

Deyn kept smiling as she modeled sky high Burberry platform heels at the show, in aid of survivors of the Haiti earthquake - but particularly to benefit expectant mothers in the region through the CARE organization. Ever the professional she picked herself up and continued on, only to fall again a few steps later. Deyn promptly removed the shoes before walking the remainder of the runway barefoot.

She later Tweeted of her wipe out: “First show of Fashion Week! Took a tumble! Got up! Fell again. Should have stayed down the first time. Twice! WTF! Ouch my knees!”

Tickets for the NY show sold out in just three days, raising more than $100,000, which is expected to reach more than $1 million following additional donations.

The looks, from such designers as Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior and Carolina Herrera,  modeled in the show are to be sold from today on NET-A-PORTER.COM starting March 15 with all proceeds going to the charity.

Campbell has staged previous Fashion for Relief shows in New York after Hurricane Katrina and the massacre in Mumbai, India.

She plans a similar show to benefit Haitian women during London’s fashion week on February 18.
