Jean Paul Gaultier wants to know Which Muse Are You? Punk, Hollywood Glam, Hip Hop, Ingenue, or Rock n Roll?
Just as French Fashion Week kicks into high gear with an array of super-luxe and expensive designer duds, Jean Paul Gaultier’s collaboration with Target will hit stores at prices far less than his ready-to-wear collection.
Jean Paul Gaultier, the legendary designer who heads up his own brand in addition to the legendary Hermes, is set to provide fashion to the masses with a fabulous collection that pays tribute to the American women, celebrating the forces of style both past and present in American pop culture. “My collection with Target pays homage to the wide range of personalities that make up the diverse styles of American women,” said Jean Paul Gaultier. “From ingénue to rock ‘n roll, this collection celebrates women of all ages and a host of distinctive, iconic American styles.”
Gaultier follows in the steps of Alexander McQueen and Anna Sui as the third fashion designer in Target’s series of Designer Collaborations, a relatively new concept intended to boost the discounter’s cheap-chic status.
Jean Paul Gaultier has long been known as the enfant terrible (bad boy) of fashion. Gaultier, who has always identified with popular culture — producing costumes for Madonna in the 1990s including her famous cone shape bra — is known as one of the industry’s master tailors.
The designer was one of the first to feature innerwear as outerwear on the runway. He has based many of his collections on street style and ethnic influences. In 2003, he became the designer at the French luxury house Hermès, replacing Martin Margiela, one of his former apprentices.
Celebrating how American women have revolutionized fashion over the decades, Gaultier has closed five different muses to base the collection around: Rock n’ Roll chic, Hollywood glamour, Ingenue, Hip-Hop, and Punk.
Ranging in price from $17.99 -$199.99, this line of seasonal, affordable must-haves includes high-waisted pants and shorts, mini skirts, strong-shoulder jackets, cropped tanks and swimwear that women everywhere will covet.
A criss-cross bandage nylon dress exudes modern glamour while a halter neck A-line dress defines old-Hollywood lady-like appeal. Women will rock n’ roll in a cropped two-tone motorcycle leather jacket with zipper detailing that adds a tough chic topper to spring’s lightweight dresses. Hip-hop takes center stage with a fitted dress featuring suspender straps and cropped open shoulder knit tops with drawstring waist. Gaultier shows punk rebellion by adding a mix of exotic tattoo-inspired graphic prints to mesh leggings and wrap cardigans as well as swimwear; boy-shorts and halter bikini tops go from tattoo edgy to feminine floral.
Jean Paul Gaultier for Target hits Target.com and more than 250 Target stores nationwide from March 7, 2010 through April 22, 2010.
