HAPPY HOUR: David Beckham to Miss World Cup

March 15th, 2010 · No Comments

One of the most dreaded injuries of any athlete occurred this Sunday. Soccer superstar David Beckham, 34, tore his left Achilles’ tendon during a non-U.S. soccer game.

On loan from his home team, U.S. LA Galaxy, Beckham was playing on Milan’s team against Chievo on Sunday. He reportedly trapped a pass with his left foot and awkwardly stepped back the wrong way. Immediately after a quick step forward he began to hop on his right foot with pain and tears in his eyes.

He stumbled to the sideline for medical attention where it was determined that his Achilles tendon had been torn.

His national manager, Fabio Capello stated, “I am very sad for David that he has suffered this injury. We have to wait for the results of the scan, but it looks like he is out of the World Cup … David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow.”

Participating in three World Cups prior, odds are against the possibility of being the first English player to attend the World Cup four times.

On top of that, he is the biggest draw in the US’ Major League Soccer and it is uncertain when he will be able to play again.

Today, Beckham heads to Finland for specialized treatment and a scan of the injury with a potential operation in the mix.

His website expresses his love and gratitude for fan support throughout this unfortunate event.
